According to Canadian researchers first impressions of website form in as little as 50 milliseconds (1/20th of a second). That's all the time you have to put your best foot forward, less then a second. In less then a second not cant see fine details, but you can definitely make the assumption of professional or not, and if you can make that decision the next step would logically be professional site will get conversion and (or) sales, while unprofessional looking sites will not get either.
